My favourite part of the job:
The most enjoyable part of my job is visiting the ship. It’s always impressive to see warships from inside, meet the people working there and talk to them about improving their workplace. And it’s satisfying to see my previous work in place.
Most challenging thing I’ve ever done:
My biggest challenge so far was changing a set of complex project drawings created by various designers. It took me couple weeks to go through it all, but the whole project was approved and released to the client.
My typical day:
As a designer, I find solutions for technical issues and make improvements possible. That includes preparing project documentation as the final output, to pass on to the engineers.
My day involves using CAD software to create 3D models and 2D drawings.
At our team meetings we review the tasks we’ve got lined up and the best ways to go about them. I consult with engineers on calculations, shipbuilding and warship designs. I need to visit the ships to gather information, by taking photos, talking to crews involved, taking measurements and making sketches.
I also take part in safety training. The shipyard working environment needs constant training and safety reminders to prevent injury. Babcock makes serious efforts to make it a safe place to work.
