Inspiring the next generation with Babcock’s Future Engineer work experience programme
We recently welcomed 36 Year 10 students from schools across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall to take part in this year’s inspiring ‘Future Engineers’ programme at our Devonport site. Aimed at nurturing the next generation of engineering talent, the initiative welcomed the group of enthusiastic students who were keen to explore the world of engineering and defence.
Designed to provide the aspiring engineers with a comprehensive overview of the opportunities available within Babcock, throughout the week students got involved in a whole range of hands-on activities and insightful presentations delivered by our experienced engineers. The group also had the opportunity to take a tour of the Devonport facilities, getting an up-close look at our infrastructure and ongoing projects to further spark their passion for the world of engineering and technology.
A highlight of the programme was the opportunity to work in teams on a real-world engineering project, designing their own humanitarian vessels and presenting their projects to the group. Their final ships were judged by leaders from within Devonport at the end of the week.
Not only did the experience hone their technical skills, but also fostered teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving, with students proudly receiving an Industrial Cadet Silver awarded certificate at the end of the programme.
This programme followed the success of our first ‘Experience of the Workplace’ event. Held 25-27 June at our Oceans Gate facility in association with the Devon, Plymouth and Torbay Careers Hub, 17 students from three different schools who had not secured any work experience had the opportunity to experience a real-world workplace environment where they could explore the opportunities within Babcock.
Committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers, we’re looking forward to welcoming more young minds to our site in coming years.
