Babcock Proud to Partner with Formula Student 2022

Babcock International Group, the aerospace, defence and security company, is proud to partner with Formula Student (FS), Europe’s biggest student motorsport event once more for 2022.

Over 100 university teams from around the world will converge on Silverstone between 6-10 July to compete in the event and demonstrate their engineering and technology expertise.

Babcock is the partner for the event’s Artificial Information (AI) category, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). FS is seen as the kite-mark for real-world engineering experience, combining practical engineering experience with soft skills including business planning and project management.

Babcock’s Head of Digital and Data Integration, Steve Penver, said he was delighted to be supporting the FS-AI competition once more.

“Events like this really encourage and develop that next generation of engineers and technologists which is vital for businesses like Babcock.

“We’ll be working with the AI teams over the course of the event programme and be on hand to advise on any digital and AI element they’re developing for their vehicles.”

Former Babcock graduate, Bruce Coull, took part in the event in 2011-2014 with the University of Strathclyde and says graduates should use it as a springboard for the start of their career. He now works as a Senior Programme Manager at Babcock.

“I always knew I wanted to go into engineering and I had a real passion for technology, but the difference with Formula Student is that you get to be part of a team that acts like a business and you work alongside people that are as passionate as you are.”

“I really believe the experience I gained from my time participating in the event, has really laid the foundation blocks for my career at Babcock. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the next generation step up and enjoy it for the unique experience it will give them.”

Formula Student Chief Judge, Dan Jones, said that Babcock’s continued support is key for the event.

“Having launched in 2019, it’s great to see the FS-AI competition growing year on year and we are delighted that Babcock share our vision of developing young engineering talent and providing them with the skills they need to meet the demands of engineering businesses.”

FS-AI challenges university teams to build and develop the driving systems to run a fully autonomous vehicle, unlike other parts of the competition which rely on physical drivers.
