Decarbonising complex global estates
To meet science-based targets in line with a 1.5°C limit to global warming, we have an ambitious Plan Zero 40 decarbonisation strategy, which sets us on course to achieve net zero across our own operations by 2040 and full value chain by 2050.
We’re pleased to have worked with Energy Systems Catapult, an independent research and technology organisation, to establish net zero concept designs setting out how we will decarbonise our selected pathfinder sites in line with industry best practice.
We have made significant progress towards smart solutions:
- Development of a repeatable and scalable approach specifically for Babcock, based on Energy Systems Catapult’s experience of leading the Modern Energy Partners (MEP) Programme
- Established archetypes to support the development of further decarbonisation plans
- Conducted stakeholder engagement during the decarbonisation planning process to identify investment requirements
- Developed evidence on the technology, costs and interactions needed for decarbonisation, which can be considered and applied across our sites.
We now have a comprehensive plan which not only sets out standardised processes but also outlines some immediate actions which we can take to reduce our carbon footprint. The processes we’ve developed with Energy Systems Catapult are actionable on a wide range of large (e.g. dockyards) to small (e.g. single building) sites in different regulatory environments and the approach can be replicated across Babcock, and other’s estates. Capability has also been enhanced at all levels within Babcock to ensure we can effectively deliver these plans.
Watch the video below to learn more about this work and our approach where Luke Tattersall, Babcock Head of Environment and Christine St John, Platform Lead – Complex Site Decarbonisation and Head of MEP at Energy Systems Catapult, discuss decarbonising complex global estates, Babcock’s Plan Zero 40 approach, and how we’ve worked together to develop 10 Pathfinder Carbon Reduction Plans that capture around 75% of our estate related Scope 1 & 2 emissions.
